Start mass-producing a mug of your own design in my new ceramics studio in Gothenburg, Mölnlycke! You need to know how to center—the foundation of wheel-throwing—but you don’t need to be able to build thin, even walls! Over the course of 6 creative hours, you’ll learn to wheel-throw an original mug from clay—using a method that creates a functional plaster mold. You’ll take the mold and a 1-liter container of casting clay home with you, and cast your mugs at your own pace. You can make a couple of mugs at a time, but then the mold needs to dry out thoroughly. Just think how satisfying it is to easily cast an entire series of identical mugs! The course includes clay for the original piece, plaster for the mold, and 1 liter of casting clay. Aprons are available to borrow. We’ll provide coffee and tea! TECHNIQUES: Throwing the original piece and applying a slip coat, making a plaster mold, testing the casting clay in existing molds. NUMBER OF SPOTS: 6 participants (3 pottery wheels) DURATION: 3 hours per session, 6 hours total LOCATION: Former Keramikstudio, Höjdvägen 4, Mölnlycke First session: Introduction – “Throwing a clay original with a base.” A mug is a good place to start. Maybe you’ve already sketched your dream mug and know what design and dimensions it should have? If not, we’ll figure it out here. We’ll throw the piece on the wheel, apply a slip coating, and prepare the original for plaster casting. Second session: Casting the plaster mold. We calculate and mix the plaster. We fill the molds and let the plaster set. Then the clay original is removed, and you’ll have a nice, usable plaster mold. Unfortunately, they aren’t dry enough to use right away—it usually takes a week for the plaster to dry completely. Instead, you can try casting with casting clay in my molds and take your mold home with you. What do you do next? You can buy a bucket of casting clay to take home and cast your series in the comfort of your own home. 1 liter of casting clay is enough for 7–8 mugs. Then drop off your cast pieces at the studio for bisque firing. After that, we’ll find a day when you can glaze your mugs. The total cost is about 50 SEK per mug, including casting clay, firings, and glaze.
