WORKTOPS, SANDING & TREATING
We explore concrete table tops in more detail, but there is also time for other ideas, as described in "Make your own moulds".
How do you cast a concrete table top which is as smooth and tough as possible? Many factors affect this.
1. How do you get rid of ALL the air bubbles?
2. Different concrete qualities and their impact
3. Reinforcing. How and when it's necessary...
4. Various sanding methods
5. Various sanding methods for finishing and repairing.
Everyone makes their own table top. Either in a round, ready-to-use casting mould which you borrow (Ø 47 cm) or in a rectangular plastic mould which can be cut to the dimensions you require. The maximum size is 120 x 90 cm so that we have space on the workbenches. If you already have a frame for the table, bring it with you.
We try out sanding methods and finishing treatments on test slabs which I have cast in advance, because your own concrete objects will not be sufficiently dry in time.
We cast table tops and go through points 1-3. Then there is time to cast other objects. We will be using LOTS of concrete, so it's just as well that the big concrete mixer is doing the hard work! You can spend your time on ideas and create a number of casting moulds.
We sand by hand and using a sander. We will talk about finishing treatments and try some out. Everything you have cast will be unmoulded. The concrete dries more quickly than usual thanks to Rapid, an additive.
